Hayabusa — Then, Now & Future

“Hayabusa”— I think of a jiu-jitsu rash guard brand first. What comes to your mind?

In the classical literature class with Matsuda sensei of Kokugo Works in Hiroshima, we studied three different “Hayabusa” connected with Japanese poems (waka) by looking at space exploration, Japanese history, and human advancement.

During the class, I was moved and my eyes got teary many times. Especially, when we learned about “hayabusa,” a robotic spacecraft launched in 2003 to a small near-earth asteroid Itokawa, which is approx 186,411,356 miles from earth (can you imagine?!) and came back to earth in 2010 after seven years of the mission.

For the first time in human history, Hayabusa succeeded in bringing tiny grain samples back to Earth from an asteroid.

How does this Hayabusa connect to current Japan and the future of the world? What is the mission we entrust to our future human beings?

All are such fascinating discoveries explorations.

広島発国語ワークスの松田先生の素読クラスではその中でも超感動な三つの「はやぶさ」を和歌で繋ぎ、壮大な宇宙の探索、日本の歴史と人類の進展を学びました。

中高生向けの内容とも聞いていたので、高校生の我が子も参加。アメリカ人の我が子にとって日本語が少々難しいところはその都度解説も入れながらも、本人なりに声を出して一緒に素読し、感動を共にできたことは、ハハの宝。

何度もウルウルきた。

特に、平成15年（西暦2003年）に打ち上げられ、3億キロメートル（想像すらできない距離）離れた小惑星イトカワから人類初の砂を持ち帰るミッションに成功し、7年後の平成22年（西暦2010年）に戻ってきた探査機はやぶさ。これがどうのように日本の地と世界の未来に繋がっているのか。。。

そして、未来の人類に託す希望、ミッション。夢とロマンがありますね。
