Moon Dumplings 月見団子
My heart goes out for those affected by the wild fires in Northern California. I pray for those affected and those who are fighting to get it under control.
The day before the full moon, we made dumplings at home. Creating the perfect the texture by mixing water and rice powder is very soothing. The sphere shape represents the full moon, usually decorated with pampas grass representing the ample harvest of rice.
In the western part of Japan where I am from, we put sweet bean paste over the dumplings to symbolize the cloud over the full moon.
On the night of the full moon, a rank promotion ceremony was held at our dojo. With many parents attending, I was happy to share the story of the moon viewing festival and the dumplings for everyone to enjoy.
週末発生した北カリフォルニアの大規模な山火事により、ベイエリア近辺の空気は煙り、家の窓を閉めても外からキャンプファイアーの匂いが入ってきます。早く火事が収まります様に。行方不明の方々が見つかります様に。今の所こうして普段と変わらない生活を続けていくことができることに感謝しながら、今日もスタートしています。
満月の前日、お月見用にお団子を作りました。娘はこねこねするのがとても楽しかった様です。きな粉よりもあんこで頂くのがお気に入り。大阪では上にのせるあんこを満月にかかる雲に見立てています。腹持ちもよくおやつにはもってこいですね。
満月の日にはお世話になっている道場で昇級式があり、親御さん達も来られていたのでお団子を差し入れしました。簡単なお月見の歴史と「見立て」の話をして、みなさん「美味しい、美味しい」と喜んでもらえてとても嬉しかったです。こうして日本文化を知ってもらえる機会があり感謝でした。
