September Calligraphy Class〜Moon Viewing 9月の書のクラス〜月見酒

Today is moon-viewing festival. Did you look at the moon? 

I went outside and admired the moon, enjoying the melody of fall insects.

This month’s calligraphy is 月見酒ーtsukimi zake.  It means to admire the moon while enjoying tasty sake and feeling happy. This also wraps us in this beautiful imagery of drinking up the moon reflecting on the surface of sake in a cup. 

I have an underage student, so I hope he can still relate to this word thinking of his favorite non-alcoholic beverages.

It was the first time to try a Japanese style brush painting with moon and the pampas grass—symbols of this festival. After a brief explanation, we just go ahead and enjoy painting. No need to be picky. Just have fun with the brush.

It was also first time for me to conduct an online-live calligraphy class with a student who moved to the East Coast. It was a different experience to teach brush work over the screen. But the feedback was very positive, and I am very excited to continue teaching my student across the continent!

今日は中秋の名月。お月さまを仰ぎましたか。私も外に出て虫の声を聴きながら雲ひとつない空に輝く月を愛でました。

今月の書は、「月見酒」。美しいお月さまを見上げながら、美味しいお酒を呑んでいい気分に浸りましょう、という意味を込めて。そして、宴の際、酒面に月を映しそれを飲んで味わうという、なんとも風情のある雰囲気に包んでくれる言葉です。

未成年の生徒さんもいらっしゃいますので、美味しい飲み物をいただいている気分だけでも想像して楽しんでくださいね。

今回は書に加え初めて墨絵にも挑戦。簡単に説明した後はもう楽しむだけ。絵は遊び心満載に。細かいことは気にしない、気にしない。みなさん、個性的な素晴らしい作品ができました！

そしてもう一つ始めてのことといえば、先週から東海岸の生徒さんもオンラインライブでクラスに参加してくださっています。画面越しの書のお稽古は初めての経験。筆使いや説明の仕方など対面と勝手が違いましたが、満足して頂けたようで一安心。これからもより楽しく学んでいただけるよう改善しながら頑張ります！
