Japanese time at Preschool 幼稚園で日本語クラス

I visited Little Sprouts Preschool in Watsonville, CA to conduct a Japanese time last week.

We had fun singing some Japanese songs, reading Japanese books, practicing phrases, thinking about the images on the moon and checking the locations of California and Japan on the globe.

After class, children surprised me with their signed thank you card and a beautiful sunflower. They rushed into me saying “arigato!”, almost stacking me with hugs. My happiness gauged over 120%. My heart started melting.

I really felt that the teacher prepared the children for my visit by the way they behaved and acted around me. She herself is very eager to learn Japanese culture and language as she also trains nin-jutsu at the dojo twice a week. And I think children feels her passion.

During the Ninja Summer camp in August, my calligraphy session had extra time to fill with the youngest group. So I did a few dances and songs I’ve been waiting to share with ninja children for so long. Then before the end of the day, one of the counselors of this group approached me and said she would love for me to visit her preschool as an enrichment program for her students to experience Japanese culture and language.

I used to visit a preschool in Atlanta for 3 years to do the exactly the same. Yet with my daughter growing up, I thought I wouldn’t be visiting preschools anymore, so I tossed almost all the materials and Japanese children books I’ve collected over the years when I moved to California. We never know what life brings. I am excited to start fresh all over again.

The preschool is 50 min drive over the hill. It’s 15 minutes South from our usual dojo. It is my mission to spread Japanese culture where it needs me, so I will visit them monthly from now on and I am very happy.

The classroom is cozy and bright with large windows. A path leading to the school is as pretty as it can be with fields. There is a chicken coop next to their fenced playground. The pacific is just down the road.The children showed me snails, secret pathways, calling me and taking me around their usual place.

It is so hard to leave the place! It is truly a paradise.

I played with them outside for 15 more minutes before heading home. I am already looking forward to seeing them next month! Thank you for having me!

海辺にある幼稚園で、日本語タイムを担当させていただきました。

絵本の読み聞かせや手遊び、地球儀を使ってカリフォルニアと日本を見たり、お月さまの中に何が見えるか考えたり。楽しい楽しい時間でした。

最後はサプライズでみんなのサイン入りのカードとひまわりを生徒さんがプレゼントしてくれました。そして「ありがとう！」と言って私に走り寄り、みんなのっかかるように続けてハグしてくれて、もうそれだけで「幸せ度１２０％」。顔がほころぶ私。

夏の忍者キャンプをお手伝いした際、小さい子グループの書の時間が10分程余ってしまったんですね。その時間を利用して、前からずっと忍者の子供達とやってみたくて温めていた手遊びをいくつかやったんです。その日の帰り際にこのグループのリーダーさんの一人から「うちの園でも日本文化の時間を持ちたい！」とリクエストいただいたのが始まり。今年のキャンプで初めてお会いしたんですが、子供達の接し方が寄り添う感じで一味違うなと思っていたら、幼稚園を経営されている先生だったんですね（納得）。

私が来るにあたり、先生がとても丁寧に子供達の心の準備をしてくださっていたのが手に取るようにわかりました。それにこの先生ご自身も忍術道場の生徒さんで週に２回トレーニングをされているだけあり、日本文化や日本語も積極的に学ぼうとしてらっしゃる姿勢が子供達にも伝わっているように思います。

幼稚園は家から車で50分。いつもの道場からさらに15分ほど南下した海沿いにある小さな幼稚園。必要としてくれるところに日本文化を伝えるのが私の使命ですから、これから１ヶ月に一度足を運ぶことになりそうです。アトランタで３年間毎月幼稚園で同じようなことをしていました。娘も大きくなり、もう幼稚園へ出向くこともないかなと手作りの教材や沢山溜めた絵本を殆ど引越しの時に手放しました。人生どこでどうなるかわからない。また新たにスタートです。

大きな窓があり、陽が差し込む教室。園へ続く道は広い畑の一本道。外には遊具の横に鶏小屋があり、お花も咲き乱れ、海もすぐ近く。懐いてくれた子供達が私の手を引いて色々見せてくれる。「ほら、カタツムリがいるよ！」「ここが秘密基地なの。」「こっちにきて！」まるで楽園。

いや〜ん、私、帰れません！！

外で15分ほど一緒に探検して幼稚園を後に。また来月も楽しみです。
