Rank Promotion Exam 書の検定

Yesterday was the deadline for the calligraphy exam held 4 times a year in the school I belong to.  As Japanese school year renews in every April, this one was the last exam for this school year.  I mailed it last week to make sure mine arrives there on time.

The assigned words was from a Zen idiom 「玉雪開花---Gyoku Setsu Kai Ka」

The  literal meaning is the beautiful snow falls on the tree branches and now looks like flower bloosms.  This very snow wet the branches for the flower to come in the spring. 

This describes this year’s sceneries of Japan and Atlanta perfectly.  I imagined the beautiful snowscapes to practice for this test.

The many weather related characters such as snow 「雪」, clouds 「雲」, thunder 「雷」, all share the same part of rain「雨」.  I notice that my school’s exam choose these words very frequently.  I bursted to my master “again?”  She just grinned. 

The deeper lesson from this idiom is the effort you make now will bring the better result at the end.  Let’s see how I did in a few months.

昨日は日本で年４回の検定の締め切り。私は先週郵送しました。

今回の課題は「玉雪開花」という禅語。

意味は、美しい雪が枝に降りかかり花のように見える。そしてその雪が樹を潤し春に花を咲かせる。まさに今年の日本の冬、アトランタの冬ですよね。そういう景色を思い浮かべながら気持ち良く仕上げることができました。

「雪」はじめ「雲」や「雷」の漢字の部位は「あめかんむり」になります。なぜか、うちの学校の検定出題には「あめかんむり」の頻度がとても高い。思わず師匠に「またですか？」と言ってしまいました。師匠はオホホホホと笑っておられましたが。

この言葉をもう一歩掘り下げると、努力していればそれ以上の実を結ぶことができる、という意味もあるそうです。さぁ、結果はいかに。。。また数ヶ月後に。
