Calligraphy Art Show in Atlanta アトランタの社中展

Every year in early December, the calligraphy art show is held in Atlanta.  This is a private only event for the students of my master, and it is a time to catch up, celebrate and encourage together, admiring works of each other as not all of us meet due to the different class schedules.

Though I haven’t participated this last two years since I moved, I suddenly felt urges to submit something after sending my work to Tokyo earlier this month. Then, the idea came to me to send my students’ work to the show in Atlanta.  My master agreed and she is looking forward to receiving our works. 

But my calligraphy class only takes place once a month. The December class won’t make it to the show, so it means the artwork must be completed in November class. Some students only done calligraphy twice, and some three times, and many of them have never written their name in Hiragana before. So what should I do to make it happen….

But they have created beautiful works and my concern was in vain. I selected their favorite words in advance and asked for the good feelings it brings. Filled with aroma of sumi ink in the room, they brought up their spirit to the best condition and finished beautifully.

Since this was their first time making artworks, I have selected the four treasures carefully.  The handmade brush and paper were named after

the founder of the calligraphy school I belong to.  The crafter who make these have retired and we cannot purchase these items any more.  The handmade sumi ink we used is from Genrindō in Nara prefecture, which has been in business over 280 years. My students practiced preparing the brush and grinding sumi ink.

My hope is that my students can sense the existence of my teacher and be encouraged to love calligraphy more.  And likewise, I hope that my master will see works of my students and see that I am passing on the knowledge correctly.

The works will be mailed out next week and I am very excited.

私の師匠のいるアトランタでは毎年12月に社中展が開かれます。これは師匠の自宅で内輪のみで行われるのですが、普段はクラス時間の関係であまり顔を合わすことのない仲間もいる中、みんなで交流し、お互いの作品を見て一年の成長を喜び合い、これからの励みにすると言うとても楽しみな時間なのです。

私は引っ越し、ここ２年は参加してなかったのですが、先日作品を東京に送ったことがきっかけで、遠方参加が急に身近に。今年は師匠に「私も作品送ります！」と宣言。そんな中閃いたのが、私の生徒さんの作品も一緒に送り社中展に参加するということ。相談すると快諾してくださり、とても楽しみにしてくださっています。

ただ、私の書のクラスは月に１度のみ。12月のクラスだと間に合わない。と言うことは11月に終わらせなければいけない。みなさんにとって、書のクラスは３回目、生徒さんによっては２回目の方もおられます。名前も平仮名で書いたことはない。うーん、どうすればいいかなぁ。

でもそんな教える側の心配は吹っ飛ぶほど、素晴らしい作品が出来上がりました。

生徒さんにとってはどれも思い入れのある文字を予め私がセレクトさせていただきました。墨の香りに包まれて、心を良い状態にもっていき、萎縮することなく堂々と豊かに書き上げました。素晴らしい！！

みなさん初の作品ということで、道具にも四宝にもこだわりました。手漉きの紙も筆も私が所属している学校の創立者である初代哲仙の名を取った品で、職人さんが引退されもう手に入れることはできないもの。奈良の玄林堂さんの墨で実際に墨すりを体験。

私の師匠からすると孫弟子にあたる私の生徒さん。会ったことはないけれど、私の上にいらっしゃる師匠の存在を感じることで一つの励みになり、これからももっともっと書を好きになってくれると嬉しいな。また師匠には、蒔いた種が広がっていることを実感していただきたけたら嬉しいな。
