Kids Japanese with Seasonal Flair 季節を感じながら子供日本語クラス

In my Japanese class at Pathways Dojo, I always include aspects of changing seasons in our study as it plays a very important role in Japanese culture.  In kids class especially, I prepare my class to make sure they have fun learning about Japan.

In October, we learned about “くり” kuri—chestnut over two weeks.

We sang a very popular Japanese children song called “Under a Big Chestnut Tree” and children were fascinated that Japanese point to their nose to mean “myself”.

We also played “letter search” from the Hiragana chart.

In second week, we practiced writing with a brush: first with water then with the ink. They were a little nervous, but their playful and excited hearts won. Look at their proud artwork! Beautiful!

I passed out a package of roasted chestnut to each student to try at home. They have a little different texture and I hope they at least tried to experience the food.

I wish for my students to grow challenging new things. And I hope that my Japanese class help them gain confidence in trying new things!

道場での日本語クラスでは、移りゆく季節を感じながら日本について学べるよう意識しています。特に子供クラスでは、「楽しい！」を実感できるよう工夫しています。

１０月は2週にわたり栗について学びました。

「大きな栗の木の下で」を歌い、日本では「私」って鼻を指すんだ！という発見にも。(アメリカでは胸を指します）。

ひらがな表から「く」と「り」を探し形を確認。

二週目は水書き書道で練習した後、墨で仕上げました。子供達緊張しながらも楽しくてワクワクが止まりません。落款を押し、ビシッと決まりました。誇らしい！

お土産に「むき栗」をプレゼント。初めての食感でいい体験になりましたね。

子供達にはこれからも色々なことに挑戦しながら育って欲しい。そして日本語クラスで体験したことを自信につなげていってくれたら嬉しいです。
